New Delhi, April 29

The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), which is to look at various issues, including tariff and monitor quality of services at major airports across the country, will be in place by October this year, the Secretary Civil Aviation, Mr Ashok Chawla, said on Tuesday.

Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Indian airports: The emerging opportunities’, the Secretary said the AERA will play the role of an umpire for the airport sector. The seminar had been organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry along with the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Speaking at the seminar, the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Mr K.N. Shrivastava, said that the Government was developing a number of airports around the country, including a new greenfield airport at Goa.

“It has been decided that the existing airport in Goa will continue to function even after the greenfield airport becomes operational. Besides, the new airport at Pune will also start soon and a partner for the Navi Mumbai airport will be in place by January next year,” Mr Shrivastava said.

The Airports Authority of India is also on track to complete the work on the development of 24 non-metro airports by March 2010, he added.

The Government plans to soon announce an air cargo policy to give a boost to the sector, Mr Shrivastava said.
