Machilipatnam, April 23 The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said here on Wednesday that the construction of a port here would usher in great industrial progress in Krishna district and the rest of the hinterland in Andhra Pradesh and Machilipatnam, popularly known as Bandar, would become one of the most important towns in the State.

He was speaking at a public function at China Karagraharam here after laying the foundation stone for the port to be constructed by Maytas Infra-led consortium at a cost of Rs 1,590 crore.

The Chief Minister said the State Government was committed to developing ports in the State.

Citing the example of Krishnapatnam port in Nellore district, he said the port there had given impetus to the setting up of many industries.

Apache-Adidas had set up a footwear unit in the district.

“We gave them only 250 acres of arid land, not fit for agriculture.

They have set up the unit, providing employment to 5,000 people till now. In two years’ time, the number will swell to 20,000,” he said.

He promised the people that Machilipatnam would witness similar growth and several port-based industries would come up here.
