Events ‘Scope to expand ties with US in climate change, energy security’ “The areas of interest are promising for the US and India to stand together as global leaders Our Bureau Chennai, April 23 India can be a major player in the global community if it demonstrates leadership on common challenges and opportunities such as climate change, energy security, non-proliferation, global trade and investment, said the Under Secretary of International Affairs, US Dept of Treasury, Mr David H. McCormick. Delivering the keynote address on infrastructure with focus on clean technology, organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Southern Region, Mr McCormick, said trade between India and the US has continued to expand and reached over $50 billion last year. With over three million Americans of Indian descent and over 80,000 students in the US, cultural ties were also strong. Though India and the US have accomplished much in the past through several initiatives including US-India CEO Forum and Economic Dialogue, there was much more to do in the future. He said infrastructure investment, financial sector liberalisation, bilateral investment, clean technology and multilateral trade offer global challenges and opportunities. “These areas of interest are particularly promising for the US and India to stand together as global leaders and make meaningful progress, and should provide the basis for a common agenda going forward.” The agenda may seem daunting, but are significant opportunities as they will enable the two countries to not only enhance bilateral partnership but also foster economic growth, reduce poverty and protect the environment. Besides it would help promote global economic stability, he said. More Stories on : Events | Climate & Weather | Foreign Relations
