Repair work to delay flights at Kolkata airport

Manish Basu

Kolkata, April 23 All flights at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata are going to be delayed for eight days starting from April 30. The delay will be caused by the repair and upgradation of the radars at the airport, Mr P.K. Singhal, Regional Director, Airports Authority of India, told Business Line today.

“The monopulse surveillance radar will remain withdrawn throughout, while the primary radar will not be operational from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. over these eight days. All domestic, international flights will be delayed for 5-10 minutes depending upon the timing of the flights,” Mr Singhal said.

“All airlines have been intimated about this,” he added.

The delay will be caused due to spacing out of the flights, Mr Singhal said.

“The gap between flights can be stretched from the usual three minutes to 6-8 minutes,” he added. The radar system during this time will be run manually by air traffic control through a mechanism of directly communicating with the pilots, airport sources said.

One of the two motors that rotates the approach surveillance radar and the monopulse surveillance radar mounted on top of it will be repaired, Mr Singhal had said earlier. Bharat Heavy Electronics Ltd is in charge of the project.
