Centre to start national cancer institute in Chennai

Our Bureau

Chennai, April 12 Chennai will soon have a National Cancer Institute for research to offer services and treatment for the dreaded disease, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, has said.

Delivering a keynote address in inclusive healthcare at the Tamil Nadu Vision Summit organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)-Southern Region, Dr Ramadoss said the Centre would invest around Rs 500 crore to set up this facility, the first of its kind in the country.

It would come up in a 10-acre plot belonging to the Medical Stores Depot in Vepery, he said. The construction would commence soon and the research institute would be operational in 30 months.

Medical park

The Centre was also planning to set up a vaccine and medical park in the 400-acre plot near Chengalpattu to manufacture vaccines and medical equipment, he said. Currently, more than 90 per cent of the medical equipment were imported, which inflates the cost of treatment.

Most of the medical equipment could be manufactured locally at about one-tenth of the price, thereby reducing the cost of the treatment, he said.

Hindustan Latex Ltd would be the promoter for the parks, he added.
