Kandla emerges largest cargo handling port

Our Bureau

Kolkata, April 1

The Kandla port has emerged as the largest cargo-handling port.

In 2007-08, the port’s traffic throughput was 64.89 million tonnes (mt), marginally up over the Visakhapatnam port’s 64.60 mt.

The Visakhapatnam port, which held the number one position for seven successive years, thus has slipped to number two position.

In 2006-07, the Visakhapatnam port handled 56.39 mt and the Kandla port 52.98 mt.

Crude traffic contributed significantly to the Kandla port’s elevation to number one slot.

The port’s crude throughput in 2007-08 was 28.54 mt as compared to 24.14 mt in 2006-07.

In the Visakhapatnam port, iron ore and pellets was the largest contributor – 18.36 mt in 2007-08 as compared to 14.70 mt 2006-07.

The Paradip port handled a total traffic of 42.43 mt in 2007-08, up by a little less than four mt or 10.18 per cent over 38.52 mt in 2006-07.

Thermal coal and iron ore were the two major contributors to the port’s traffic throughput.

The thermal coal throughput in 2007-08 was 13.34 mt ( 12.47 mt) and iron ore 12.95 mt (11.88 mt).

The Kolkata Dock System (excluding Haldia Dock) handled 13.7 mt (12.6 mt in 2006-07).

Other ports are still to compile their traffic figures, it is learnt.
