Airport closes door on onlookers

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, April 1 If you are among those who want to have a glimpse of the international airport, better go with a passenger. You can also go there to receive someone. Or else you will be stalled at the approach road.

After allowing curious residents for nine days, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has decided not allow general visitors from Wednesday.

Thousands of people from the city and the nearby villages and towns have been thronging the airport at Shamshabad to have a look at the ‘world-class airport’.

“On Sunday alone, about one lakh people visited the airport. It is hampering the pace of work at the airport. Also, the pressure on infrastructure too will grow, making it unmanageable for us,” an airport official told Business Line.

Parking charges

Meanwhile, the airport has decided to begin collecting parking fee, starting April 3. While it is Rs 70 for four-wheelers, it would be Rs 15 for two-wheelers for the first two hours. There would be no fee for the first 15 minutes.

The airport handled 1.70 lakh passengers, including 27,000 international passengers, in 2,208 air traffic movements.

On the cargo front, it handled140 tonnes of international and 40 tonnes of domestic cargo, an airport press release said.
