Roadways Gangtok-Nathu La road If the border trade with China through Nathu La pass in Sikkim is to be stepped up as per the avowed objective of the governments of the two countries, the 51-km Gangtok-Nathu La road has to be widened. Not an easy task though. But then the work is in progress, despite so many odds such as difficult terrain, hostile climate and the problems in mobilizing men, machinery and materials in high altitudes. The deadline, it is learnt, is 2012. On the Chinese side, it is reported that the roads have not only been built, the Chinese authorities, presumably emboldened by the successful completion of the Beijing-Lhasa railway network, are even mulling constructing a Lhasa-Nathu La rail link. Inquiries reveal that a move is afoot on the Indian side also to construct railway lines from Siliguri in the foothills on West Bengal to Sikkim, first up to Rangpo, to be extended gradually to Gangtok. If Srinagar could linked by rail, why not Gangtok? There is even a proposal to construct a railway yard in Siliguri, it is further learnt. OUR BUREAU
