Karnataka: Irrigation potential to go up

BANGALORE: The cumulative irrigation potential under major, medium and minor irrigation (surface water) is estimated to go up only marginally this year to 30.22 lakh hectares (ha) from 28.63 lakh ha last year. Additional potential of 1.59 lakh hectares is expected to be created during the current year. The potential which was expected to be created in the major and medium irrigation is 20.56 lakh ha for this year, a small increase of only 1.51 lakh ha in 2001-02. The increase in the case of minor irrigation has been dismal at 9.66 lakh ha as against 9.58 lakh ha in 201-02.

According to official figures, major and medium projects which have been completed so far contributed to the creation of irrigation potential of 4.61 lakh ha. Twenty major projects and 21 medium projects were under implementation.
