COMPUTER Sciences Corporation (CSC) and Motorola Inc have signed a 10-year global IT infrastructure outsourcing agreement.

The contract, which becomes effective from May 1, has been valued at approximately $1.6 billion.

Under the agreement, CSC would manage Motorola's mid-range desktop and distributed computing infrastructure worldwide, as well as its global help-desk and network infrastructure functions.

For managing these, CSC would acquire certain Motorola IT infrastructure and network assets.

In a release, Mr Sam Desai, Senior Vice-President and Chief Information Officer, Motorola, said that the agreement was business-driven as the company hoped to improve productivity, quality of service, systems and transactions.

"The agreement emphasises our commitment to drive efficiency and improve financial performance," he added.

Mr Van B. Honeycutt, Chairman and CEO, CSC, said that Motorola would not only gain improved cost structure but the flexibility to access modern tools, and industry-best practices across the spectrum of information technology.

Mr Mike Manley, Corporate Vice-President and Director (Global Infrastructure Solutions), Motorola, said that the affected Motorola IT infrastructure employees would be offered employment by CSC.

According to the release, about 1,300 Motorola employees are expected to join CSC.

More than half of them were based in the US.

The rest were located in the European, West Asian, African and Asia-Pacific regions with a small number in Canada and South America.
