Railways Waltair Rly division income up Our Bureau
VISAKHAPATNAM, April 10 WORK would start soon on the new coaching complex to be built here and also on the proposed additional platform (the sixth) in the railway station, Mr V.N. Tripathi, the Divisional Railway Manager, Waltair, has said. At the annual press meet here today to review the works in the division, he said tenders had been invited for the works and they would be finalised in a week or so and the work would commence soon after. Extension of the other platforms would also be taken up. It would take roughly one year to complete the works. An additional platform would also be built at Vizianagaram station with all facilities. Platforms would also be extended at Koraput station in Orissa. The Waltair division had registered its best ever performance during 2002-2003, though passenger traffic had suffered due to drought, he said. The total earnings touched Rs 1,482 crore as against Rs 1,385 crore last year. The freight amounted to 29.40 million tonnes during the year against 27.35 million tonnes last year, registering a growth of 7.5 per cent. The number of passengers was 1.63 crores. Mr Tripathi said that from April 1 the division had become part of the East Coast railway, but there were a lot of misapprehensions on the count. "There is no need for such misgivings. The division is the basic operating unit in the railways and therefore there would be no adverse impact on allocation of funds or the execution of works,'' he said. On running a special train to Araku valley in Visakhapatnam district to promote tourism, he said at present two bogies were being allocated in the train passing through the area, but special tourist trains could always be run, whenever the Tourism Department felt the need for it. There were, however, certain operational difficulties in running a full train on a daily basis, he explained.
