NEW DELHI, April 10

THE Union Government will procure 1.20 lakh tonnes of potato from farmers in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal to protect the interests of farmers, the Agriculture Minister, Mr Ajit Singh, said in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Making a statement regarding prices, Mr Singh said one lakh tonnes of potato would be procured in Uttar Pradesh, while 20,000 tonnes of potato in West Bengal.

The Centre and the State Governments would bear the losses, if any, on a 50:50 basis subject to 25 per cent of the total procurement value under the Market Intervention Scheme.

The minimum intervention price was determined on the basis of the cost of production, Mr Singh said.

The Uttar Pradesh Government reported an estimated production of 102 lakh tonnes of potato during 2002-03.
