Infosys to hire 1,000 more by June

INFOSYS Technologies has said that it expected to hire about 1,000 professionals in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal.

"We are looking to add about (gross) 800-1,000 employees in the first quarter," said Mr S. Gopalakrishnan, Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer.The company added a gross of 1,539 employees in the fourth quarter, of whom 363 were lateral hires, taking its overall headcount to 15,356 at the end of the fiscal 2003. The net addition to employees during the year was 4,618, the highest ever in the history of Infosys, said Mr Nandan Nilekani, President, CEO and Managing Director.

Infosys increased the utilisation rate of its employees during the year to 77.60 per cent as compared with 70.10 per cent in the previous year.

The utilisation rate, excluding trainees, was 82.20 per cent (72.90 per cent). For the fourth quarter, utilisation, including trainees, was 77.80 per cent, while excluding trainees, it was 82.10 per cent.

Infosys had about 14,001 software professionals as on March 31, 2003, up from 12,801 in the previous quarter. Of these software professionals, 572 belonged to the banking business unit.

As on March 31, the company had 34,31,350 sq.ft. space capable of accommodating 16,970 professionals and 4,07,400 sq.ft. under completion capable of accommodating 3,300 professionals, said Mr Gopalakrishnan. "We are hiring just in time and expanding the infrastructure accordingly," he added.

Commenting on the salary hike, Mr Gopalakrishnan said, "We are promoting employees this year and adding to the variable pay of the employees."
