Covansys looks to more revenue from India

Raja Simhan T.E

CHENNAI, April 10

THE US-based Covansys Corporation, provider of information technology services, expects revenue from India to go up from 17 per cent currently to about 30 per cent of global sales in three years.

The percentage of revenue derived from India operations was based on customer billing rate, the company's Vice-President (Marketing), Ms Michelle Jones, told Business Line on Thursday.

Covansys India operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Covansys USA, with over 1,450 professionals working in Chennai and Bangalore development centres. According to Ms Jones, this year Covansys would largely focus on the US public sector and applications maintenance and development outsourcing. Other than the US public sector, Covansys expected increased revenues from India in sectors such as application maintenance and healthcare, she said. Covansys' revenue for the full year fell to $382.8 million ($404.7 million).

The company would also focus to grow its employee strength faster than in the US, she said. In India, Covansys hired 400 IT professionals, representing a 29 per cent year-on-year increase. The company also reduced its global non-billable headcount by about 100 people last year.

According to Ms Jones, in the US, the company would pay increased attention to mid-market companies who have not outsourced so far, and such projects would be done from India. "Our flexible delivery model and offshore solutions offer an opportunity for our clients to achieve their IT objectives. Companies outsourcing from India could save between 20 and 40 per cent," she said.
