Readymade Garments Garment exports up 17 pc in 11 months Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, April 7 AFTER a lacklustre performance during fiscal 2001-02, garment exports to quota countries had acquitted well by logging a 17 per cent growth during the first 11 months of the fiscal 2002-03 at $4,086.10 million. According to figures compiled by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) here, exports of readymade garments to restricted countries during April-February 2002-03 amounted to 1,097 million pieces valued at $4,086.10 million, representing an increase of 10.91 per cent in terms of volume and 16.59 per cent in terms of value. Exports to the US amounted to 389.6 million pieces valued at $1,933.8 million, representing an increase of 32.07 per cent in terms of quantity and 17.99 per cent in terms of value. Exports of readymade garments to the 15-member European Union (EU) were 645.1 million pieces. In comparison to the comparable months of the previous fiscal year, there has been an increase of 2.64 per cent in terms of volume but a huge increase of 18.56 per cent in terms of value, reflecting higher price realisation. Exports to Canada amounted to 62.3 million pieces valued at $185.3 million, representing a decrease of 5.03 per cent in volume and 10.31 per cent in terms of value. Exports of garment to restricted countries during February 2003, the latest month available has been 132 million pieces valued at $486.8 million, against 111.4 million pieces valued at $365.9 million in the corresponding month of 2002, showing an increase of 18.49 per cent in terms of volume and 33.04 per cent in terms of value.
