ECC revamped into 4-business sector model

MUMBAI, April 7

LARSEN & Toubro has restructured its Chennai-based Engineering Construction and Contracts division, telescoping the 18 strategic business unit structure into a four-business sector model.

This is part of the company's plan for its ECC division for 2005-2006, when, as a "leader in construction in the Indian Ocean rim," it hopes to achieve a target of Rs 9,000 crore from the division with profit before interest of more than 9 per cent on a manpower strength of less than 9000, said a news release from the company.

Its current 18-SBU model, with seven domestic regional offices and four overseas offices will be realigned based on four core-technology fronts: buildings and factories; civil and transport infrastructure; industrial projects and utilities; and electricals and instrumentation.

Geographically, the entire market will now be divided into four zones: the west zone, operating from Mumbai, will look at opportunities in West Asia and Africa, apart from the Mumbai region itself.

The Kolkata-based East zone will cover the Kolkata region, and the markets of Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar and further explore emerging opportunities in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and China.

The north zone, based in Delhi will oversee projects in the Delhi and Ahmedabad regions, as well as Afghanistan, Central Asia, Uzbekistan and the Russian federation.

The south zone, which will include the Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore regions, will be responsible for operations in Sri Lanka, Male, Malaysia and Indonesia.
