Kalam sets store by technology knowledge

The President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, presenting the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) award for excellence and outstanding contribution to public sector management (Institutional Category 2000-01) to Mr C.P. Jain, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NTPC, in New Delhi on Saturday.

NEW DELHI, April 5

THE President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has urged the public and private sectors to think big and look at the world as one single market to make Indian economy stronger.

He advocated focussing on the major areas of agriculture, food processing, education and healthcare, information and communication technology. Focus must also be on supply of reliable and quality power and on strategic sectors to increase the GDP growth to nine per cent per annum.

The President was inaugurating the Conference of Chief Executives of Public Sector Enterprises organised by the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) and the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), here on Saturday.

"Technology and knowledge would play an important role in value-addition to our core competence of natural and human resources, a must for achieving our vision of 2020, that is of sustained economic development," he said.

Dr Kalam also presented the SCOPE awards for excellence and outstanding contribution to the public sector management for the year 2000-01 and 2001-02.

In the individual category for 2001-02, Mr K.G. Ramachandran, CMD, BHEL, has been awarded the award for excellence and outstanding contribution to the public sector management, while Dr V.K. Koshy, CMD of Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), has been awarded for 2000-01. In the institutional category, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has been award the award for excellence and outstanding contribution to the public sector management for 2000-01 and Indian Oil Corporation for 2001-02.
