ADSL leads broadband in Asia-Pacific region

NEW DELHI, Oct. 8

AS much as 65 per cent of the broadband Internet users in the Asia-Pacific region used the ADSL technology in 2001, according to a report by IDC, an IT market research agency.

IDC said cable modem was the second most preferred mode of broadband access in the region with a 32 per cent share.

"The overall ADSL equipment market in the region will be $963.2 million, representing a CAGR (2001-2006) of only one per cent. Of this total, ADSL modem CPEs (Customer Premises Equipment) will generate revenue of $409.6 million and DSLAM lines will show revenues of $ 553.6 million," IDC said in a statement here.

"In Asia-Pacific, the growth in Internet access is driving demand for always-on, faster broadband services," said Ms Sandra, Vice-President of IDC Asia/Pacific's Communications and Peripherals Research.

"Adding to this, the Governments in the region such as South Korea have emphasised the importance of broadband in increasing their country's competitiveness in the global economy and as an aid to driving economic activity. The number of early adopters of technology in the region is also quite high, helping to feed the overall demand for broadband services," Ms Sandra said.

Although ADSL services will remain the access technology of choice in Asia/Pacific, the growth rate of new subscribers in larger markets will slow as countries reach saturation points and as other access technologies, particularly metro Ethernet, gain steam, she said.

On the network equipment side, the number of DSLAM lines shipped in 2001 totalled over 5.8 million, showing a year-on-year increase of over 103 per cent.
