Kerala transport staff resent insurance premium hike

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Oct. 2

THE Kerala State Road Transport Workers' Federation has decided to organise a demonstration in front of the offices of the general insurance companies here on Thursday demanding withdrawal of hike in insurance premium.

The General Secretary of the All-India Road Transport Worker's Federation, Mr K.K. Divakaran, said here that the almost three-fold increase in insurance premium for vehicles has created a crisis in the transport industry.

The hike in premia has come at a time when prices of diesel, petrol and spare parts have spiralled. The federation warned of strong action if the hike in premia was not revoked immediately.

The warning comes in the backdrop of the four public sector majors having slapped massive hike in the insurance premia for tempos, taxies, autorickshaws, bus, trucks and other public carriers effective from last month.

As per the revised tariff, premium for autorickshaws has gone up from Rs 669 to Rs 1,930, for goods auto from Rs 566 to Rs 2,020 and for goods tempo from Rs 3,028 to Rs 7,050.
