NEW DELHI, Sept. 30

ABB, the power and automation technology group has bagged a large contract from PowerGrid Corporation of India Ltd. (PGCIL) to design, build and install a new power transmission system at Visakhapatnam. The Vizag II high voltage direct current (HVDC) back-to-back East-South interconnector III system, to be installed besides an existing HVDC station, will increase the capacity for high voltage power exchange between the two power grids by 500 MW.

The total order is valued at about Rs 235 crore of which ABB India's work scope is around Rs 130 crore, according to a press statement by ABB India.

The HVDC system is to provide an additional asynchronous power link and enable transmission of surplus power from the eastern to the southern grid apart from insulating the two regions from disturbances in either network and provide voltage and frequency support and thereby ensure reliable power supply.

The scope of the order involves design, manufacture, delivery, erection, testing and commissioning of all equipment including thyristor valves, converter transformers, control and protection systems and AC filters. The project is scheduled for completion and commercial operation by the beginning of 2005.
