Power Power for all by 2012: Geete Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Sept. 9 THE Ministry of Power is determined to ensure "power for all" by 2012 through an integrated approach to tackle the power shortage in the country. This was stated by the Union Minister for Power, Mr Anant G. Geete, in his inaugural address to Lux Pacifica 2002, the three-day international lighting conference organised by the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE) here on Monday. Mr Geete's address, read out in absentia, spoke of a multi-pronged coordinated action plan for energy conservation under which as much as 25,000 MW of power could be saved at a cost of less than about one-fifth of new capacity creation. The conference, being attended by a large number of lighting professionals from all over the country and abroad, were informed that the Government would give a lead in this direction by replacing inefficient lamps with energy-efficient lamps in its establishments. The Government is also actively pushing for minimum standards, labelling and testing of lighting products to create a strong market. The plan envisages a reduction of at least 30 per cent in energy consumption for lighting in Government institutions and 20 per cent in the private sector. In his address, the President Emeritus, ISLE, Mr H.S. Mamak, said that over 100 papers were being presented in the technical sessions of Lux Pacifica 2002. These papers were in the areas of `Behaviour and Light', energy saving options and futuristic lighting.
