Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, June 5

THE Government on Tuesday signed two agreements with the World Bank aggregating $542 million for phase two of the Gujarat Emergency Earthquake Reconstruction Programme and for the Karnataka Community Based Tank Management Project.

The World Bank assistance for Gujarat Emergency Reconstruction programme will help reconstruct houses in rural and urban areas, repair and strengthen damaged public buildings, roads, bridges, dams and irrigation infrastructure and reinforce undamaged buildings and important public buildings in earthquake zones. The assistance for this project will be $442.80 million.

The Karnataka Community based Tank Management project proposes to cover approximately 2,000 existing tank systems in Karnataka.

There are approximately 37,000 minor irrigation tanks in the state, the majority of which are either silted or for other reasons in a state of disuse.

The project when completed would provide a useful model for scaling up this approach State-wide, according to an official release. The World Bank will provide $ 98.90 million for this project.
