BSNL Bengal circle may see drop in revenue

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, May 17

THE basic telephone services revenue of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) could show a shortfall in the current fiscal in West Bengal circle because of the cut in charges effected in January.

Mr R V Datar, Chief General Manager of West Bengal telecom circle of BSNL, told newspersons here on Friday that though increase in volume would boost the revenue by about three per cent, there would still be a revenue shortfall at the end of the current financial year. However, other services will help improve the total revenue of the circle for 2002-2003. The targeted revenue for the current year is Rs 469 crore against Rs 390 crore in 2001-2002. During 2000-2001, the circle had earned a total revenue of Rs 310 crore.

BSNL is planning to introduce call centre services in the circle soon. This will be the newest of the services apart from fast lleased lines services and WLL facilities that are picking up fast.

The financial outlay for the current year has been projected at Rs 1,183 crore.
