EIGHTY TIFAC-CORE (The Industrial Forecasting and Assessment Council - Centres of Relevance and Excellence) centres are to become functional by December 2003.
Disclosing this here on Friday, Dr M.S. Vijayaraghavan, Adviser, Mission Reach, said that there were 14 such centres as on date and another six were expected to come up by June this year. Sixty more were to be established subsequently, taking the total to 80 before January 2004.
The six centres that were to be established before the end of the next month would be located in technical higher education institutions, while the proposal for the establishment of 60 more had been cleared, he added.
These centres, established by the Union Government under its Mission Reach Programme, are expected to strengthen the industry-institute link.
There was encouraging response to the programme in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Gujarat.
Dr Vijayaraghavan said that there was a proposal to inter-link these centres, so as to make communication cost-effective and facilitate quick exchange of information. `We cannot afford to work in isolation any more', he added.
