Plea to restore LTC for Govt staff

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, May 17

THE Union Minister for Tourism, Mr Jagmohan, today said that he had met the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to appeal to him to restore leave travel concession (LTC) for Government employees.

"The outcome of the discussions will be known once a decision is taken," Mr Jagmohan said, when questioned on whether Mr Vajpayee was favourably inclined towards restoring LTC for Government employees.

The Minister said this while addressing a national convention on `Civil aviation and tourism : Opportunities and challenges,' organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

The Minister said that the Government was keen to have "great hub" of tourism and culture in each State in the country. "We have been trying to convince the other Government departments and the Planning Commission that tourism is an activity which will help create new patterns of habitation".

The Minister also made a fervent appeal to the private sector to participate in the development of tourist sites and circuits. Mr Jagmohan announced that the Government was keen to promote eco-tourism and two areas — Ladhak and Uttaranchal — had already been identified for the purpose.

Earlier, addressing the convention, the Director-General, Tourism, Mr V.K. Duggal, said that the Government had decided to keep the visa-on-arrival scheme in abeyance for some time. "The decision to keep the visa-on-arrival proposal on hold for now has been taken keeping in view the security environment in the sub-continent," Mr Duggal said.

While admitting that there had been a steep decline in international tourist arrivals in the period after September 11, Mr Duggal pointed out that now the situation had been reversed. "There has been an increase in tourist arrivals during the first quarter of this year which clearly shows that the earlier dip in international tourist arrivals has been reversed," Mr Duggal said.
