BANGALORE, May 17

MAGMA Design Automation Inc, a Nasdaq-listed company providing chip design solutions, is toying with the idea of setting up its third research and development centre in Bangalore.

The US-based company, which boasts of a high precision electronic design automation (EDA) tool solution, has identified both Bangalore and Taiwan for its new R&D centre. However, it was still studying the option with regard to the advantages relating to the capabilities that will enhance the company's pursuit to maintain its leading edge in EDA.

Magma has emerged as a strong company in process technology for EDA tool solution with capability for .13 micron level integrated circuits (ICs).

Magma, one of the four leading companies in the world with sub-micron capability after companies such as Cadence and Synopsis, has appointed the Bangalore-based D'gipro Design Automation and Marketing Pvt Ltd as its distributor of its EDA tools solutions in India .

``We expect Magma's advanced and complete flow to be more desirable for our customers because it is a truly integrated design flow for ultra deep sub-micron designs. D'gipro has also been in the forefront of VLSI tool solutions for many years in India'' said Mr S Ramachandran, Managing Director of D'gipro.

Talking to reporters about Magma, Mr Lung Chu, Vice-President, Asia-Pacific, said that his company has specialised in the sub-micron level of .13 from its early stage giving it the leading edge in the EDA technological capability.

On Magma's proposal to set up a new R& D centre, Mr Lung said both Taiwan and Bangalore had their distinct advantages; it would take a while before taking final decision.

Mr Lung said D'gipro's experience in the EDA business should help it promote Magma's products in India, especially with many design services companies and multinational corporations in India moving into the area of IC physical implementation design, India was emerging as an important market for Magma in the Asia-Pacific region.
