Roadways Registration plates launch deferred Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, May 10 THE Union Government has postponed the date of introduction of the new high security registration plates to February 28, 2003, Mr B. C. Khanduri, Minister for Road Transport & Highways, said here on Friday. All new vehicles registered on or after February 28, 2003 would have to use the new high security registration plates, he stated. The owners of existing vehicles will have time till February 28,2005 to switch over to the new high security registration plates. The original date for introduction of the plates was September 28, 2001. This was later changed to June 30, 2002 as no vendor had got the type approval and the states were also not ready to implement the scheme. "Even now no vendor has got the type approval certificate. Several States have requested for a postponement on the ground that their selection process is dependent on the availability of adequate number of eligible vendors,'' Mr Khanduri said. Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet has cleared the setting up of a one-man tribunal to deal with grievances arising out of clearing encroachments along national highways.
