Oilseeds & Edible Oil April oilmeal exports down Our Bureau
MUMBAI, May 10 OILMEAL exports in April the first month of the new fiscal declined sharply to around two lakh tonnes. Shipment comprised soyameal (1.23 lt), rapeseed extraction (56,000 tonnes), castormeal (12,850 tonnes) and groundnut extraction (9,900 tonnes). Oilmeal exports showed respectable performance in the previous four months with shipment in excess of four lakh tonnes per month as a result of which aggregate exports during fiscal 2001-02 rebounded to 30 lt (previous year 23.4 lt). While rapeseed meal exports commence from April onwards following the rapeseed/mustard crop harvest, a fall in soyameal shipment is cause for some concern. However, representative of an international trading firm, allaying fears over falling soyameal exports said the trend could be expected to continue for a couple more months. During the peak marketing season between November and March, soyabean availability for export crushing was satisfactory and soyameal exports touched 20 lt during the period. As the effect of large kharif crop starts to wane, pace of exports is expected to be slower over the coming months, according to experts. However, the domestic market for animal feeds is now picking up and will continue to absorb whatever soyameal is produced. Crushing activity is also impacted by domestic seed prices and competition from imported oils.
