Rubber Rubber dealers allege large-scale smuggling Aravindan
KOTTAYAM, May 10 RUBBER is being smuggled out of Kerala in large quantities through various outposts. On an average about 50-60 truck loads are illicitly traded and sent out of the State, alleges the Indian Rubber Dealers' Federation. In his appeal to the Government of Kerala and Rubber Board, Mr E.T. Varghese, President of the Indian Rubber Dealers' Federation, has called for immediate steps to put an end to this illegal trading. The State Government also incurs a loss of about Rs 25 lakhs a day towards taxes, he said in a press release issued here. To those who remit taxes and undertake trading legally, such malpractices incapacitates them of carrying out the dealings further, said Mr Varghese. He claimed that large quantities of the smuggled rubber were stocked at Banglore,Delhi, Hyderabad etc. From there, it was distributed to various other consuming centres depending on the requests received by them. Those who are involved in the smuggling save the purchase tax of 12.65 per cent to the Kerala Government, cess of Rs 1.5 per cent per kg due to the Rubber Board and the excise duty to the Union Government. Effective control of the malpractice was possible only with the support of neighbouring States, he said.
