Saurav, Kapil in list of cricketers with I-T dues

NEW DELHI, May 7

INDIAN cricket team captain Saurav Ganguly and former captains Mohammed Azharuddin and Kapil Dev figure prominently in the list of 33 cricketers against whom the income-tax dues aggregate Rs 3.8 crore.

Among the present and former cricketers who have been assessed for income-tax in the last three years are Ajay Jadeja, Nikhil Chopra, Sunil Joshi and W.V. Raman and Nayan Mongia, the Minister of State for Finance, Mr Gingee Ramachandran, told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The Minister said that there were, however, no tax dues against Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, V.V.S. Laxman, Venkatesh Prasad, S.S. Das, Kiran More, S. Sriram and S. Venkatraghavan.

The Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, responding to supplementaries, said that the Government was pursuing a proactive policy to mop up Rs 3.8 crore from cricketers.
