TV makers upbeat on World Cup sales

Anand Krishnamoorthy

NEW DELHI, May 7

THE World Cup football is still many days away, but for television makers, the ball has already started rolling, with orders pouring in from football-crazy Kerala, Bengal and Goa.

With companies coming up with special promotion packages for the World Cup, these three States are buying colour televisions well in advance to be informed about the Owens and Beckhams and Effenbergs of the football world.

"April was a great month and it is becoming evident that the football crazy states are driving the sales," a top official of the Consumer Electronics and Television Manufacturers Association (Cetma) told Business Line.

According to provisional estimates of Cetma, about 4.75 - 5.00 lakh television sets were sold in April as against about 4.00 lakh units sold in April last year.

"The promotions are definitely helping and a clear trend is emerging that these three states (Kerala, West Bengal and Goa) have already started buying," a spokesperson for Samsung India Electronics Ltd says. Samsung is aiming to cash in on the World Cup football season by introducing a promotion scheme during which it is hoping to have sales of Rs 310 crore.

`Samsung Dabaake Jeeto' promotion, which, started in West Bengal on May 1 and goes all-India on May 10, will run till June 30.

The scheme lures customers by offering assured gifts for about Rs 10 crore and industry watchers say more such schemes from other companies are in the offing.

Not to be outsmarted by its South Korean rival (particularly with South Korea being a co-host to the World Cup), LG Electronics is planning to launch a special edition colour television called the `Soccer TV'. This TV will look like a soccer ball and would be in a 21-inch model.

"We are surely expecting good sales from Kerala, Goa and Bengal, where TV sales have traditionally been better than rest of the country during World Cup football," an official at LG Electronics said.
