Cashew Kerala: Cashew workers' union stages protest march Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 6 THE Kerala Kasuvandi Thozhilali Union, which owes allegiance to the Trade Union Centre of India (TUCI), organised a protest march on Tuesday. The march marked the culmination of a "hunger trek'' taken out from the head office of Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation at Kollam on April 30. It sought to highlight a 12-point charter of demands, which included reopening of 44 factories owned by the corporation and Kerala State Cashew Workers' Apex Industrial Co-operative Society (Capex), which have remained closed for the last 11 months. The union also demanded steps to bring back under the control of the corporation those factories handed over to the private sector on the basis of court orders, payment of retrenchment compensation to the concerned workers and payment of arrears in the group gratuity policy. The corporation is yet to pay up the dues to the workers welfare fund. It should assign workers in the surrendered factories to other factories under its control and inquire into complaints relating to provident fund payments, the union leaders said in their charter.
