Fiat software centre in Bangalore soon

Abhrajit Gangopadhyay

BANGALORE, May 6

FIAT India is likely to set up a software development centre in India to source software for its global needs, head of research for Fiat India, Dr Franco Bonello, said.

Declining to detail a timeframe for such an initiative Dr Bonello said that such a plan is still in the nascent stage. ``We are looking at the possibilities and now India is known globally for its software,'' he added. Currently, Fiat has a ``very small team to develop software'' in India, he said.

Increasingly, most of the new global models are equipped with 32-bit to 64-bit microprocessors that offer a variety of safety and entertainment features.

Commenting on whether outsouring to software vendors makes more sense than setting up own operations, Dr Bonello said that such decision depends on the company's future strategies.

It can be recalled that Wipro Technologies, the global software development arm of Wipro Ltd had executed a $3 million order for Magneti Marelli, parent Fiat Spa's subsidiary last year. Wipro jointly developed a multimedia module `Connect' which provides navigation, telephone, entertainment and emergency services to the drivers of Alfa Romeo 147.

With more and more local software firms focusing on embedded systems as growth drivers, it is logical that increasingly automotive giants will outsource such projects.

Meanwhile, several global auto-giants such as Dymler Chrysler and General Motors have set up their software sourcing and research centres in the southern city of Bangalore.

``Cost-wise, such projects are attractive,'' Dr Bonello said.

Traditionally, Indian software developers write codes at one-sixth cost of those written in the developed Western economies.
