SSIs urged to tie up with defence labs

COIMBATORE, April 30

THE Tamil Nadu Governor, Mr P. S. Ramamohan Rao, has allayed fears that the opening up of the Indian economy would spell doom for domestic industries.

He also advised the small-scale sector to enter into tie-ups with the defence research labs so as to produce products that were needed by the defence sector.

Speaking at a function after presenting the ISO 9001:2000 Certificate to the Coimbatore District Small Industries' Association (Codissia), he cited the case of some of the domestic pharmaceutical companies that have stood up to the competition from the MNC pharma majors. Some Indian pharma companies have been able to list their shares on the stock exchanges abroad and, he said, others too could emulate their example.

Mr Ramamohan Rao said one area in which the industries in this belt could benefit was in forging tie-ups with the defence research labs for manufacturing customised equipment needed by the defence sector.

Mr D. Gandhikumar, President, Codissia, received the ISO 9001:2000 certificate from the Governor.
