Janaraksha policy

It is a well-known fact that medical attention has become expensive. With fewer facilities in government hospitals, most patients are compelled to visit private hospitals, many of which charge exorbitant fees. The Mediclaim policy of the general insurance sector has not been popularised, possibly because of poor marketing strategies. Moreover, premia were hiked recently in response to mounting claims.

In this context, the `Janaraksha policy', announced in the Budget by the Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, assumes significance. The premium is proposed to be a rupee a day. Workers in the organised and unorganised sectors and those just below or above the poverty line could buy such a policy. The Government should ensure that the policy is administered well and meets the common man's needs. This is perhaps the Budget's only `gift' to the common man.
