Sabarmati Express on fire; 55 killed

GANDHINAGAR, Feb 27

IN a gruesome incident on Wednesday, 55 passengers travelling by the Sabarmati Express were torched to death as miscreants set fire the train at Godhra, near Vadodara.

All the dead were reported to have been travelling by the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express.

The train was coming from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh and was headed for Ahmedabad.

According to the Gujarat Home Secretary, Mr K. Nityanandam, the deceased included 25 women and 15 children. As many as 43 passengers sustained burn injuries.

Curfew has been clamped and shoot at sight orders issued in Godhra. The police have arrested 31 people, suspected to be behind the attack.

The incident has led to communal flare up in various parts of the State and separate incidents of stabbing have been reported from Vadodara, Anand and Ahmedabad.
