Rabi prospects bright: CMIE

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, Feb. 11

RABI prospects for 2001-2002 appear bright as the area under rabi crop during the 2001-2002 season is higher by 11 per cent at 54.7 million hectares, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

``Compared with the normal sowing, this coverage works out to 90 per cent, up from 80 per cent a year ago,'' CMIE said in its latest Monthly Review of the Indian Economy. Much of the increase is on account of higher area for pulses. The area under pulses cultivation has increased by 30 per cent to 12.5 million hectares as compared to 9.8 million hectares a year ago.

The area under wheat has risen by 1.4 million hectares to 25.7 million hectares and oilseeds from 7.7 million hectares to 8.1 million hectares.

The increase in wheat cultivation is on account of higher acreage in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

In Madhya Pradesh, the area under wheat cultivation has risen by 0.61 million hectares and in Uttar Pradesh by 0.5 million hectares. Punjab has also reported a marginal increase in area at 3.33 million hectares. However, Rajasthan has reported a decline in acreage at 2.01 million hectares as compared to 2.3 million hectares a year ago.

Wheat production for this current season is estimated by CMIE at 75 million tonnes, an increase of nearly 10 per cent over the previous season.

``The rise in production would put further pressure on already high stocks and make the need to export more urgent,'' CMIE said.

However, exports have been slow because of low world prices and poor quality of Indian wheat. The current rabi season is also witnessing an increase in acreage of coarse cereals. Jowar acreage rose by 12 per cent and maize by 30 per cent. Total production of coarse cereals during the 2001-2002 is estimated to increase by three per cent.

Pulses production is expected to rise by 18 per cent during 2001/2002. Area for gram this season was 6.9 million hectares as compared to less than 5 million hectares last year. Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have reported higher acreage for gram.
