Hard work, focused approach and patience is crucial for success, Dr Venugopalan Puhazhenthi, Professor, Department of Livestock Business Management and Marketing Economics, Konkuk University, South Korea, said.

He was in the city at the inauguration of the Business Line Club at the VLB Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology, School of Management. The event was sponsored by Karur Vysya Bank.

Delivering the guest lecture on ‘Issues on research methods in economic analysis', Dr Puhazenthi, said it would not be right to compare South Korean students with Indians. He pointed out that ‘out there, a student decides on specialisation even at a young age, makes up his mind and thereafter chooses the subject and works hard. This focused approach makes them highly successful.'

‘Though Indians are culturally rich and intelligent, we are unable to cope with South Koreans because they work really hard.'

South Korea is small, just about the size of Tamil Nadu, but has excellent infrastructure in terms of road, transport, communication, technology. The country has been through difficult times including war; yet, there has been no deviation from its focus on infrastructure development.

Evaluate strengths

While reiterating the need to remain focused, he said “evaluate your strengths. Some will be good in math, some in communications, in art, in presentation and so on. Understand your strength before you take up any activity, and then it can be easy to develop,' he advised, before adding ‘the market demand might be high, but the industry expectations could be much higher. So, try and excel or else it may not be easy to get into the industry.'
