PM may ask States to raise crop productivity

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Feb. 5

With the prices of several essential food commodities skyrocketing, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is likely to ask the State Governments to focus on increasing the productivity of major crops.

The issue will come up for discussion on February 6 at the Chief Ministers' conference convened by the Union Government.

Mr K Rosaiah, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, is in Delhi to attend the conference.

“The meeting will consider imposition and implementation of stock holding limits on essential commodities and enforcement of the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act to rein in the prices,” a State Government press release said.

The Prime Minister would ask the States to chalk out strategies to bring down the prices.

Before leaving for Delhi, Mr Rosaiah had asked officials to keep tabs on those who might be hoarding large quantities of commodities such as onion, pulses, palm oil, tamarind, rice and chilly.
