Industry Associations States - West Bengal Tinplate producers against use of GP sheets in packaging Our Bureau Kolkata, Dec. 23 The Indian Tinplate Manufacturers Association will soon appeal to the West Bengal Health Department to prevent the use of toxic galvanised plain (GP) sheets for packaging of edible oil in the State, according to its Secretary General, Mr Pradeep Sharma. GP sheet coating contained lead and zinc, which might lead to serious health hazards even if consumed in minute quantities, he pointed out. The use of the low-cost material for packaging of food items is not permissible according to the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act of 1954. Addressing media persons at a conference here on Wednesday, Mr Sharma said, “We would thus appeal to the West Bengal Government to strictly enforce the PFA act in this regard.” The association, he said, had already taken up the matter with the Governments of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the two states where GP sheet is predominantly used for packaging edible oils. Both the State Governments has already issued circulars against the use of GP sheet for edible oil packaging. Of the 4.5 lakh tonne tinplate used in the country in a year, two lakh tonne is used for packaging edible oil. The tinplate industry was expected to grow at 10 per cent in 2010, Mr Sharma added.
