Tiruchi, Nov. 23 “There is a leader in everybody. Leadership is an intuitive process and is required at all levels,” according to Mr K. Padmanabhan, Chief Executive Officer, KnowledgeQ Interactive Consultancy Services, Tiruchi.

He was speaking at a guest lecture at St. Joseph’s Institute of Management under the aegis of Business Line Club. The event ‘Campus Interface to the Corporate World’ was presented by Karur Vysya Bank.

Businesses have now come to realise the importance of conforming to embedded leadership, the leadership doctrine of catholicism, Mr Padmanabhan said on ‘Leadership in Business – A Practical View’.

Leadership, he said, is about working in a framework, increasing the bottomline of business, and ability to remember small details, alongside motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. Leaders were judged by the difference they make to society and by the legacy they leave behind.

Reflecting on his two decades of stint in the Indian Navy, Mr Padmanbhan spoke of the importance of leading by example and developing a sense of impartiality. Irrespective of domains, leaders need to acquire a holistic view of enterprise, plan well, accord the highest priority for customers, and nurture the interests of co-employees. Constant measurement of performance was the first step towards improvement.

Urging future managers to make the fullest use of the time at institutions, he said frankness, positive attitude and body language, and energy will stand them in good stead. “Show what you can bring to the organisation from the customers’ perspective,” he said. Mr Padmanabhan cautioned them against high expectations in the current scenario. “The era of sky-rocketing salaries is over”.

Delivering the special address, Mr A.S. Janarthanan, KVB Chairman, said looking at customers as masters, service outlook, and adherence to ethics were the hallmarks of business. KVB, ranked high in the index of efficiency and productivity, was carrying out inclusive banking as a mission. The momentum of the spurt in management education in the nineties was still continuing, he observed, advising future managers to develop the attributes of efficient communication and time management. There were a lot of opportunities in corporate governance and corporate leadership, he said.

Rev. Fr. A. Antony Pappuraj, Director, St. Joseph’s Institute of Management, said the institution’s motto of creating socially committed managers was in sync with KVB’s vision. With its high standards, Business Line was infusing creativity in the minds of future managers, he said.

Mr R. Srinivasan, Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Tiruchi, said the Business Line lecture series presented by KVB was a reflection of Corporate Social Responsibility of The Hindu. Mr T. Subramanian, Regional General Manager – Advertisement, The Hindu, and Mr K.V. Rao, General Manager, KVB, Karur, took part in the proceedings.
