Fishermen to stage rally in New Delhi on Nov 29

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Nov. 20 The National Association of Fishermen is planning to stage a demonstration in New Delhi on November 29 in protest against the Bill to be introduced in Parliament imposing restrictions on fishing by Indian vessels beyond 12 nautical miles and also to press the demand for inclusion of fishermen in the list of scheduled castes.

Mr S. Prabhakaran, Vice-Chairman of the association (southern States), said here in an interview that the fishermen were being subjected to all sorts of hardship as the Government was taking up various projects, such as ports and industries, without taking up the necessary rehabilitation measures.

Fisheries resources

Fisheries resources were getting drastically depleted and fishing had become totally un-remunerative due to these developments and erroneous polices of the Government.

He said that according to one study the fisheries resources in the world had fallen drastically from 100-120 million tonnes to 80 mt or so.
