Industry & Economy - Non-conventional Energy
Targets for biofuels sector

New Delhi, Nov. 19

The Minister for New and Renewable Energy Minister, Mr Farooq Abdullah, has said that viable price and indicative market are the two major drivers to give a sustainable growth to the Indian biofuels sector. Inaugurating the second Biofuels India Summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Department of Biotechnology (Ministry of Science and Technology) here on Thursday, Mr Abdullah said that the National Policy on Biofuels envisaged ambitious targets that would promote it as an alternative energy source and thereby facilitate greater investment in the sector. He also stressed that India's approach to biofuels is based solely on non-food feedstocks to be raised on degraded or wastelands that are not suited for agriculture, thus avoiding a possible conflict of fuel versus food security. - Our Bureau
