Mr L. Sreenu, Deputy General Manager, Optical Fibre Cables, BSNL, Vijayawada, delivering a lecture on ‘Opportunities for management graduates in communication industry,’ organised by The Hindu-Business Line Club at the P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science in Vijayawada. Our Bureau Vijayawada, Nov. 19 “Do it the Chinese way! And succeed” was the bottomline of a talk on opportunities for management graduates in communication industry organised by The Hindu Business Line Club here on Wednesday. The BSNL Deputy General Manager (Optical Fibre Cable projects), Mr L. Sreenu, who delivered the lecture, dwelt at length on opportunities and revolutionary changes in communication sector, hindrances, competitiveness of government-owned telecom companies vis-À-vis private telecom players, management techniques and so on. Explaining the developments in the telecom sector, Mr Sreenu said that Chinese companies such as ZTE and Huawei were ruling the global markets with their competitive prices. HCL, one of the leading networking integrators, had to lose a Rs 600-crore contract for which the BSNL had called for tenders, as the Huawei quoted a price of just about Rs 270 crore that was much less than the price quoted by HCL. “Ask the Chinese (about it), and they say that they would meet your requirements. Somehow they want to be market leaders as they understand the potential of business of after-sales,” he said, describing it as the spirit of the Chinese’s marketing strategies and their way of doing business. Mr Sreenu said unless there was necessary marketing and ability to reach the target customers, any amount of creativity, competitive prices and innovative schemes would be of little use. The BSNL was first to introduce one paise per second pulse with its scheme of 10 paise per 15 seconds, which was much less than the tariff offered by Tata Docomo now. Mr K. Satyamoorthy, AGM of Karur Vysya Bank, a sponsor of The Hindu Business Line Club lectures, explained to the students the bank’s products, especially educational loans and Yuva Sakthi Savings Account for the youth. The Hindu Regional General Manager, Mr K. Chandrasekaran, explained the salient features of The Hindu Business Line and the activities of the BL Club.
