Letters Tackling corruption The article ‘Corruption, a threat to democracy’ (Business Line, November 16) made interesting reading. I agree with the view that corruption undermines democracy. One of the measures that the Government can take to minimise corruption is to discourage the use of cash. It must ensure that the larger transactions are done through cheques or credit/debit cards. For example, it can stop accepting cash for transactions involving air tickets/AC railway tickets; electricity bills above Rs 1,000; vehicle registration, re-registration; vehicle insurance and tax; and mobile bills above Rs 1,000 per month. The Government should expand the use of PAN numbers for bank accounts too. These measures will not eliminate black money, but will reduce avenues to convert black money into white and are easy to implement. The Government can expand the list and force cash out of many transactions. Also, these moves will help track payments made by terrorists using these services. R.
