Outlook Adani Power to begin generation at Mundra’s second unit this month Pratim Ranjan Bose Kolkata, Nov. 14 Adani Power Ltd (APL) may bring the second 330 MW unit at Mundra thermal power station into generation this month. According to sources, key operations of the unit have been tested and synchronisation is expected later during the month. Considering that the merchant power producer will be facing long-term supply commitments by February 2010, an increase in generation will raise the ongoing spot sales through the power-trading arm of the parent Adani Enterprises. APL has stabilised the generation from its first (330 MW) unit in August. The unit is currently generating at full load capacity consistently for the last two months. While comments were not available from the company, industry sources said that the group had posted relatively higher margin on spot sales of power, compared to the tariffs promised in the long-term supply contracts. The proposed 4,620-MW thermal power plant is scheduled to supply 1,000 MW to Gujarat state utility beginning February 2010. Long-term supplies of another 1,000 MW to Haryana through a dedicated transmission facility will begin at a later stage. Slated to be fully commissioned in 2011, the Rs 19,106-crore Mundra thermal power station is divided into four phases. In phase-I, the company will commission two units of 330 MW each followed by 2 X 330 MW in phase-II. Mundra-III (2 X 660 MW) and Mundra IV (3 X 660 MW) are of super critical category and will be completed in 2011. Apart from Mundra, APL is also implementing a coal-based thermal super critical power plant at Tiroda in Maharashtra. The capacity of the plant has been increased from 1,980 MW to 3,300 MW.
