Regulatory Bodies & Rulings TRAI top appointments: Raja told to spell out law changes Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 13 The Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, has asked the Telecom Minister, Mr A. Raja, to spell out the action plan on the proposed amendment to the criteria for selecting the chairperson and the members of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The Government wants to place the amendment to the TRAI Act before Parliament in the Winter session. The proposal seeks to allow non-Government experts to apply for TRAI posts. Currently, only those Government officials who have held the post of Additional Secretary or Secretary or any equivalent post in the Central or State Government for a period of three years are eligible. The amendment will allow even those people who left Government service early to apply for a job with the telecom regulator. The move is in line with the criteria followed by other regulators such as the IRDA (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority), the CERC (Central Electricity Regulatory Commission), and the Securities and Exchange Board of India.
