Steel States - Kerala Anti-POSCO leaders on campaign tour Our Bureau Kochi, Nov. 11 Leaders of POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samithi (PPSS), the people’s movement against South Korean Steel major POSCO, are currently on a national campaign tour in Kochi Bangalore, Bhopal, Mumbai, Madurai etc, to generate support for a week-long coastal march from POSCO site to Vedanta University site in Orissa from November 29 to December 5. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, leaders of PPSS, Mr Abhay Sahu and Mr Prasant Paikray, alleged that the proposed steel plant and the captive port would cause large scale displacement besides creating ecological damage to the area. However, neither the Orissa Government nor POSCO have been able to enter the site area for land acquisition which has been blockaded by the local people, they pointed out. Land allotmentAccording to the MoU signed by Orissa Government and POSCO in 2005, an area of 4,004 acres of rich cultivable land, forest land and State land are to be acquired to set up POSCO’s captive port in Jatadhar, an ecologically sensitive area of natural sea mouth. The farmers have already been resisting the large scale exploitation of water by the company, the leaders said. According to PPSS, the Orissa Government had signed an MoU with POSCO to set up a 12 MTPA integrated steel plant and a captive port in the Ersana Block of Jagatsinghpur District. The company will develop and operate mining facilities in the mines allotted by the State Government based on the needs of the steel plant. More Stories on : Steel | Environment | Kerala
