Certificate course for courier boys

Divya Trivedi

Ahmedabad, Nov. 5 A certificate course for unorganised workers of the courier industry is being launched by medium scale company Maruti Courier Service Pvt Ltd.

A part-time management course in association with private institutions to begin with and later on in tie-ups with government colleges will be open for the unskilled and uneducated courier boys, according to Mr Rambhai Mokariya, Chairman, Maruti Courier.

“There are around 25 lakh employees in the industry and the delivery boys join the industry because they cannot get a job elsewhere.

“After some time, when they do not see much growth as courier boys, they leave the industry to go somewhere else.

“If we train them to upgrade their skills then they will command a better price in the market for themselves and stick with a job for a longer period of time,” he said. The men will also be trained in personality development and how to impress customers, he added.

There is always a shortage of manpower within the unorganised industry and imparting knowledge to the employees is a good way to keep the attrition rate low, he said.

India has a courier industry with a turnover of more than Rs 5,000 crore and most of them are in the unorganised sector under the banner of Federation of Indian Courier Association, barring the few big ones such as Blue Dart and First Flight who have their own carriers or flights. The smaller courier companies do not have a brand image as compared to DHL and others and hence rely on better service skills and lower prices to stay profitable and generate volumes. Maruti will train the students internally but plans to reach out to senior level executives in Blue Dart and other companies to share their knowledge and experience with the students on a regular basis.

Maruti Courier Service is a cargo and courier service operator with an annual turnover of Rs 60 crore and around 5,000 employees. It has a presence in Gujarat and Maharashtra and recently launched same-day delivery services within the region.
