Crops withering in Dindigul

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Oct. 30 Rain-fed crops in several pockets of Dindigul district are reportedly withering due to lack of rainfall.

Farmers have raised crops in largescale, expecting at least moderate rains in September-October. Millets have been raised in 10,038 hectares, pulses in 4,769 acres and oil seeds in 2,145 hectares. Among these, sources say, maize is the worst affected, with crops either at fertilisation or grain-filling stage; and for harvesting, one has to wait for six months. everal poor and marginal farmers are in a dilemma. The production of oil seeds and millets are likely to be affected severely. The rain was scanty with uneven spread, the sources added.
